Poker Update - August 16th

I got my check on Friday, and I went and cashed it yesterday. There's nothing like having profits in your pocket. It really kind of centered me. Since I didn't make a deposit, I hadn't actually felt the money, and I probably didn't feel as invested as I should have. It's not just electronic money. It's real cash.

I continued my plan to move up to .10/.25 last night, and, wouldn't you know it, I hit a hot streak after making a withdrawal! I played my usual hour long session and opened on fire, catching KK, QQ, and AK in the first two table rounds. I kept getting reasonable starting hands throughout, but, most importantly, I was making hands on the flop. It had been so long since I had a session like this, I was beginning to wonder if it would ever happen again.

There were two key hands that I thought made this successful. The first was a big hand over big hand situation. The second was a TPTK issue.

Hand 1: I'm in the small blind, and I catch QQ. It fold/checks to me in the small blind, and I make a pot sized raise. The big blind folds, but the Villain, forced to post before the start of the hand calls.

On the flop, I hit trips. I'm concerned the flop didn't hit him, and I won't get paid off. He could've thought I was making a move out of the small blind and wanted to see if I continued my aggression after the flop, or he could have an Ace or small pair. Either way, a bet here probably takes the pot down uncontested. I'm also aware that there are two clubs on the board, but I'm not that concerned about it. No guts, not glory.

On the turn, I'm initially upset at the sight of the club. Then my spectacular board reading skills (lol) kick in and I realize my trips are now full. I'm betting here without even thinking about what he has. It's not because I have a full house, but because it's the turn. I need to start building the pot now, otherwise I won't be able to make a sizable bet on the river. I'm done with hand analysis. I just want to make bets he can call. I know I'm going all the way. I bet, he calls.

His call borderline arouses me. It means he has enough to call with with a paired board and obvious flush. I bet around 3/4 of the pot. I know he will call this. He comes over the top all in. I hit the call button faster than anyone has ever hit it, and he turns over a straight. A raise with his hand his a little over aggressive given my three bets, but I certainly might have called in his shoes.

Hand 2: I'm on the button with AKo. A late position player makes a min raise. I could reraise here, but I'd rather not. I don't like investing more than one regular sized raise preflop with AKo. At these levels no one ever folds, and I end up throwing the hand away too often on the flop. I just call. It's me and him on the flop.

It's a good new bad news flop. KQJ three suited. I have TPTK, but there are a lot of hands he could have made a straight with, and he could have easily made two pair with all those high cards. I've already decided that I'm going to end my involvement in this hand on the flop. I'm either winning it now via bet/raise, checking down, or folding off.

He bets. He's a loose aggressive player, but even they don't make bluffs into flops like this. I continue with my plan and raise. I'd hate to just throw this hand away when I may be best, and I could get lucky if he just calls. He reraises me. I fold.

This is the kind of fold that I sometimes fail to make, and it costs me a lot of money. It's the difference between being a small winner and a big winner, and I hope I can continue to make it.
