I went out and played nine holes again this weekend at College Park Golf course. It's not a very well kept course, but it plays with some difficulty. I haven't played a lot this summer, because I'd begun to regress as a player last fall. I decided there was no need to waste the money if I wasn't getting better, and it was only serving to frustrate me.
I've taken a simplified approach to the game now. I'm only focusing on a couple of things:
1. Keep your left arm straight. If I'm having difficulty doing that, then I need to bend over further at the waist.
2 . Keep your lower body still. I don't mean to hold it still during the swing, but don't intentionally make any motions with it. Just let it flow with the swing.
3. On my irons, I take them straight back and finish high pointing at the hole.
4. Start the swing with your hands. No other part of your body should move before your hands start approaching the ball.
5. Stay under control (especially with your irons). If you have difficulty keeping your eye on the ball to impact or slicing, then you are swinging too hard.
6. The only thing that you should be focusing on while chipping is keeping your eye on the ball. Set everything else up (stance, alignment, distance) up before getting over the ball.
